New e-guide for managing stress at work and other psychosocial risks.

The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) continues with its particular fight against general psychosocial risks and particularly against work-related stress. Accordingly, the agency continues to provide us with regular and interesting research studies on this issue, within the framework of the Healthy Workplaces Manage Stress 2014-2015 campaign.

Following this trend, the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) today present us with a virtual guide to stress management and work-related psychosocial risks. Workplace stress is a major problem, which approximately 80% of European organisations see as a major cause for concern (see study), as well as being one of the main causes of lost working days in Europe. Even so, despite this underlying concern for work-related stress, only a third of European establishments have put procedures in place to fight it.

This virtual guide that the agency is presenting today is intended to be a useful tool for application in companies that do not have procedures in place to combat work-related stress and is especially intended for small and medium-sized enterprises. Thus, both the entrepreneurs and also the workers themselves will have ready support to make use of to better understand the implications of work-related stress and how to be able to prevent and manage it in their workplace.

What is in the guide?

One of the most noteworthy aspects of this guide is its broad scope of application. Not only because it is available in several languages but also because each one adapts its contents to the national legislation of each respective country. In total, it is planned to publish up to 34 guides, all of which are adapted to the language, context and the regulations of the subject territory.

Each of the versions will be comprised of the following information:

  • A first section that will provide detailed information on the types of psychosocial risks, their causes and the consequences that these may lead to for both the workers and the business.
  • Tips and instructions aimed at the early identification of risks and action procedures.
  • Practical examples of risk prevention and management, this point especially being focused on small businesses.
  • Information on the resources available in each one of the countries.

The main objective pursued by these guides is none other than to provide European companies and workers with a tool with which to manage work-related stress and other psychosocial types of risks. However, if we attend to their content and especially to their target audience – small and medium-sized enterprises – we can see a second objective that goes beyond the previous one: to inform and above all to make workers and employers aware of the real threat posed by workplace stress in the; contributing to eradicate that certain myth with which stress has been labelled in recent years.
