Do you know the main benefits of implementing the ISO 39001 standard?

The UNE-ISO 39001 standard is growing in strength as a very useful tool for achieving a noticeable improvement in road safety management in any type of organization. Although still in its infancy, it is not in vain that the certification of this management system began last year in 2013, and we are already aware of the benefits experienced by organizations that have implemented it thus far, which we would like to summarize in the following:

Organizational Commitment to Road Safety

The commitment of the organizations with safe mobility is possibly one of the benefits that can be discerned the most clearly. Companies engaged in passenger transport such as ALSATransportes Pujol y PujolTUSGSAL or Interbus, have been certified according to the standard as a guarantee of commitment to road safety, which has led to a number of structural improvements and greater confidence in their customers or users. Other organizations such as the Fundación Pons or the Fundación Mapfre, dedicated to working to improve road safety, have also obtained the certificate demonstrating a complete identification to the cause by these organisations.

As a complementary benefit these organizations have obtained:

  • Improved company image
  • The generation of confidence in its stakeholders
  • Increased employee commitment and working environment improvements
  • Improved mobility for the organization and environmental management
  • Commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility

Reduction in traffic accidents

A reduction in traffic accidents is one of the immediate effects of the systematization of road safety management based on 39001. A good example of this is demonstrated by those in charge of Interbus who claim that since the implementation and certification of the standard, an average reduction of  16% has taken place, or the British company that installs energy saving systems,  Mark Group, which has reduced traffic accidents by 18%, although its fleet increased by 27% and therefore the total number of  kilometres travelled.

Of course, reducing accidents also implies additional benefits:

  • Reduction in customer claims for services not completed
  • Cost reduction in administrative management / lawsuits with insurance companies
  • Reduced labour absenteeism
  • Improved productivity by reducing interruptions to various services
  • Reduced costs for vehicle repairs
  • Increased employee commitment and working environment improvements
  • Eligibility for rebates on contributions to Social Security established by Royal Decree 404/2010 in Spain

Cost reduction in small incidents

Data collection for its subsequent use within the management system regarding performance indicators enables the detection of anomalies that might seem insignificant at first. This is what the management of ALSA  told us concerning small repairs. Serious road accidents are usually taken into account more often and we do not pay attention to the small incidents suffered by our vehicles in urban traffic. By means of the standard we could visualize that this type of repair permeated much of the workshop hours, and after a year it represented an impressive amount of non-productive hours.

We can identify the following parallel benefits:

  • Reduced repair costs
  • Cost reduction in insurance premiums
  • Improved productivity
  • Improved company image
  • Cost reduction in administrative procedures with insurers

Rebates on insurance premiums

Although it may seem to be a minor point, recent experiences have shown us the tremendous importance of this benefit. The head of HSE of the London firm FM Conway, a leading provider of infrastructure services, confirms that even before being fully certified, their insurer offered a premium rebate of 10%, which represented a savings of some 71,000 euros. This amount could well cover the cost of certification, as well as maintaining it for seven years. The insurance company demonstrated that it was justified in the reduction of 10% in the first quarter after the ISO 39001 certification, since FM Conway states that earned a 60% drop in insurance claims.

This entails other benefits:

  • Cost reduction in administrative procedures with insurers
  • Improved productivity

Competitive advantage

As generally indicated by those responsible for the safety and mobility of organizations certified with the standard, although nowadays having an ISO 39001 management system is not necessary to qualify for public or private tenders condition, it is expected that it will be in the not too distant future. Being certified will therefore be a key competitive advantage for sectors such as transport and logistics. David Conway, director of quality and environment at FM Conway, estimated “In about five years having a certificate will be required for tenders. Staying one step ahead of our competitors certainly provides an excellent opportunity, and we know the contracts that we are being considered for are in part because of our commitment to road safety.”

Adjacent benefits of this advantage would be:

  • The opening up of new markets
  • Business opportunities
  • Greater competitiveness
  • Promotional purposes

In broad terms, revenues from the implementation of the standard are quite clear. Each organization will give more or less relevance to the advantages described in terms of its strategic plan.

On the 7th and 8th of October Sánchez Toledo & Asociados and PrevenControl taught a Course on the ISO 39001 standard in Barcelona  by means of which the attendees learned more about the requirements of the standard for proper implementation of the system and to acquire the skills necessary to perform audits with the ISO 39001 management system in their own organization or external organizations.
