“An hour less in the Canary Islands”: Endangered?

El tiempo estimado de lectura es de 2 minutos

In 1942, in the middle of the Second World War, Franco established, for political reasons, the current Spanish schedule to coincide with the German and Italian fascist regimes.

Last September, the Equality Commission of the Congress of Deputies approved the report of the Sub-Commission on the Rationalization of Schedules, “The Rationalization of hours, the Reconciliation of Personal, Family and Work Life and joint responsibility”.  The text must now be debated on the floor of the House.

The report proposes, among other measures,   returning to the time zone   that corresponds geographically to Spain (Greenwich), delaying time clocks to adjust back to the solar time. It also proposes the   rationalization of schedules   with compact working days, provided that it is permitted by the type of employment and the establishment of improved and equal parental permissions.

These facts, as indicated by the findings of the report, would positively impact    reconciliation in family life and professional performance,   since the worker would have more free time for training, family, and leisure while productivity, reduced absenteeism and stress would improve.

The report recognizes that it is a complex task that involve changes at the social structure, such the time to get up or bedtime, meals, television schedules, etc., but it also ensures that the benefits are undeniable, getting closer to Europe in areas where we are behind today such as in productivity, reconciliation and responsibility.

The current reality is that working longer hours than other Europeans, the Spanish have one of the lowest productivity, so it seems we can all come out ahead, theoretically…

What do you think? Does it seem feasible in the short term? Incompatible with the worsening crisis in the country? Or maybe a tool to get out of it?
