Days ago, while I was walking to the office in Barcelona, I found this stunning scaffolding assembly:
A team of workers were assembling a metallic scaffold in these unfortunate conditions. A priori, I found the following faults:
- No life line. Workers walk over the platform without any protection, with obvious risk of falling.
- Inadequate work at heights. A worker is climbing directly along a side of the structure, an action absolutely inappropriate which arises the risk of falling, muscles damaging, hits, etc.. In addition, doesn´t use gloves. The correct access may be, for example, using the inner ladder or a mobile ladder attached to a side. Don´t know how have these 2 workers went up the platform.
- Inappropriate use of personal protective equipment. Workers don´t use harness or helmet (with a recommendable chin strap). Also, wearing short trousers is not adequate in these works, since doesn´t protect legs from scratches. Risks are still obvious: falling, hitting, etc..
- Lack of signs. It is surprising that prior to assembly, no safety signs were installed in order to advice pedestrians (apart from the damaged and almost desappeared signalling tape). Warnings there should be installed: “No entry” signs avoiding access under the scaffolding during the assembly works, and warnings on objects falls and PPE use.
